One week before the World Championships, the FDJ.fr rider was hoping for a great race in front of the French crowd.
Right after the start, a group of three riders immediately created a short gap ahead of the main peloton. Francis Mourey was staying around the 5th place. However, he looked very strong. This feeling was confirmed when he went back to the lead,, 3 laps before the finished line.
Mourey was definitely in a good day, attacking 2 times in the last lap. But this was not enough, the Belgian Tom Museeun was still in Mourey’s rear wheel.
Leading up to twenty meters from the line, Mourey was overtaken by the young Tom Meeusen and therefore took a nice 2nd place, with a tinge of regret: "I am disappointed for the public, they have supported me so much during the whole race,” said Mourey. “But I am satisfied, I did the race I wanted to, I could even raise the pace in the final laps, it’s a good feeling."
Mourey is finally 5th at the World Cup overall.
Now let’s look at the World Championships in one week in Hoogerheide , for the final episode of the CX season. Mourey will give his maximum to claim a medal or even the rainbow jersey. Go Francis!
