Cyclo-Cross World Cup #7 Roma – Mourey 4th!
One week before the Cyclocross French championships, where he will do his best to get back the French tricolor jersey, Francis Mourey proved yesterday in Italy that he is definitely in good shape!
The track was very fast and the temperature incredibly high (18°) yesterday in Roma. The FDJ rider was the 1st to attack. Quickly, 4 riders leaded the race: a group composed by 3 belgian riders (Niels Albert, Kevin Pauwels and Klaas Vantornout) plus Francis Mourey. The World Cup leader Sven Nys is having a bad day, he finished 20th.
In the last third of the race, Klaas Vantornout escaped with his team mate Kevin Pauwels. But it’s finally Pauwels who claimed victory, after a mechanic problem for Vantornout. Niels Albert took the 2nd place and the MTB rider Marco Fontana created the surprise by taking the 3rd place, in honor of his MTB colleague Burry Stander, who tragically passed away last week.
Francis Mourey is 4th: “I had good legs today and am happy with my place, even if a podium would have been better!” concludes the FDJ rider.
Once again, he proves that he is part of the best CX riders in the world and that he will be a serious threat for the Belgian riders at the world championships in 3 weeks! Next step for Francis: the gold medal on the French national championships in Nommay, close to his home!
