FDJ Team - Vuelta : Kenny Elissonde dominates the Angliru !
The riders of the FDJ team are having an amazing season. This year sees a record number of victories:29! (The previous record was 28 in 2011), with both UCI World Tour victories (Bouhanni at Paris-Nice, Démare at the Ride London Classic) and legendary victories, such as Kenny Elissonde at the top of the Angliru on Saturday’s Vuelta stage.
The Angliru is like “the Spanish Alpe d'Huez” and is one of the most difficult cols in Europe with gradients of over 23%, 6 kms at 15% average gradient ... that can scare even the most experienced climbers!
Kenny attacked and was in the front group of 32 riders. He originally intended to help Thibaut Pinot in this last climb by staying at the front of the race.
However, in hellish conditions, he was the last survivor of the original breakaway and the only one to stay ahead of the leaders’ group who were fighting for the overall classification. He finally finished 26 seconds ahead of the future winner of the Vuelta, Chris Horner.
At just 22 years, he won the greatest victory of his career and proved that he is also part of this exceptional generation of young French riders. Congrats Kenny!
Thibaut Pinot defended his place in the overall classification, finishing the Vuelta in 7th place! A very promising result that proves that his 10th place in the 2012 Tour de France was not a one-off. The riders of team FDJ.fr can look forward to a good end to the season.
