Gand-Wevelgem - Démare gives us a taste of what’s to come

He already set the tone. Arnaud Démare had designated Ghent -Wevelgem as one of his main goals of the season. One week before the Tour of Flanders, two weeks before Paris -Roubaix, Gent Wevelgem opens this period of classics and cobblestones.

After 233 km of racing, a lot of crashes had reduced the peloton. Favorites were not spared, André Greipel himself crashed and suffered from a dislocated collarbone.

Nothing was sure until the final sprint. Supported throughout the whole day by his teammates, Arnaud Démare was in the top 10 as the riders began the last kilometer.

Peter Sagan (Cannondale) launched the sprint with 200 meters to go. Properly seated in his rear wheel, the German rider Degenkolb and Démare were the only ones able to pass. It was a close finish, but the Giant- Shimano rider claimed victory.

However, satisfaction prevails over Démare’s frustration: " This second place is very valuable to me, especially on a race like Ghent -Wevelgem . It's almost like a victory; it proves that my progress is real. It was part of my goals and I think I am ready for the next two weeks." explains Démare.

Next installation in one week on the roads of the Tour of Flanders.
