Paris-Roubaix - Arnaud Démare 12th !
For this 2014 edition of Paris - Roubaix, the riders of the team FDJ.fr took to the cobbles on their new Lapierre Pulsium, developed specifically for this kind of demanding race.
The "Hell of the North" concluded the first part of a busy Classics period: Gent Wevelgem, A Travers les Flandres, GP E3, Tour of Flanders ... Arnaud Démare, the sprinter from Team FDJ.fr, had targeted these races as his main objective. After a superb 2nd place in Ghent Wevelgem, the French rider was hoping for a great result this weekend.
Arnaud Démare riding his new Lapierre Pulsium in the dust of Paris - Roubaix!
But Paris -Roubaix is a cruel race. The cobblestone sections are the real judges of the race. One crash plus three punctures... Démare suffered more than his share of bad luck! On a race over 250 kilometers, every problem takes its toll on the result.
In the last kilometers, he could not follow the favorites’ group (Boonen, Cancellara, Sagan, Terpstra). Nevertheless, he clung on and led the sprint of the second group. This allowed him to take the 12th place, and be the first French rider. No doubt, with less bad luck, he would have finished in the top 10.
No regrets however, as it was only his second participation in the Hell of the North.
Special mention also goes to David Boucher, William Bonnet and Mathieu Ladagnous for a hard fought race.
For Team FDJ.fr, it’s now time to go to the Ardennes Classics: Liège -Bastogne- Liège, Amstel Gold Race and Flèche Wallonne.
