Our patented FPS (Full Power Suspension) suspension technology appeared on the very first X-Control in 2001. In the following 14 years this virtual pivot point suspension technology has proved its worth. As the X Control developed over the years, so too did FPS, which was entirely reworked in 2005, giving birth to FPS2.
In 2015, Lapierre has innovated once again: FPS2 evolves into FPS+! The 2015 X-Control is in line with its predecessors, but even more efficient! Still based on a virtual pivot point, the FPS+ suspension eliminates pedal bob even better than before. The 2015 X-Control version has unrivalled momentum and is unbeatable at pedaling. With 5 mm of extra travel, the shock absorption of the new X-Control is also improved: FPS+ is even more progressive at the end of the curve and will not be perturbed by big impacts.
Virtual pivot point
As with OST+, our FPS+ suspension is based on a virtual pivot point. What does that mean ? We use the term virtual pivot point when the rear wheel is not linked to the frame by one single pivot point. In our case, FPS+ has two linkages to link the rear wheel axle to the front triangle. The virtual pivot point is situated at the intersection of the lines passing from the axles to the linkages, it moves depending on the suspension.
Therefore, the rear wheel axle does not follow a perfectly circular trajectory, but an optimal movement resulting from the combined movement of the two linkages. The trajectory is perpendicular to the line of the chain. This prevents kickback and means that pedaling is not impeded by the suspension.
How does it work ?
The effect of pedal bob caused by pedaling is permanently fought by the effort of the chain:
Equilibrium position: when the rider is on the bike, the suspension is in an equilibrium position that we call « SAG » and which depends on the weight of the rider. In this position, the virtual pivot point is aligned with the chain, so there is no pedal bob.
Compression (positive travel): the rear wheel rises, the virtual pivot point is then above the chain. The chain tension brings the rear wheel axle down towards the equilibrium point.
Extension (negative travel): the rear wheel descends, the virtual pivot point passes below the chain. The chain tension brings the rear wheel axle up towards the equilibrium point.
We therefore obtain a suspension that permanently corrects itself. The conception of the FPS+ kinematics (position of axles, length and inclination of linkages, etc.) enables us to keep the virtual pivot point as close as possible to the line of the chain.
As soon as the rear triangle is forced out of the equilibrium position by pedaling, the chain tension brings it back into position. Pedal bob is therefore counteracted before becoming problematic. The bike is stabilised and the rear wheel is literally glued to the ground, offering unbeatable adherence!
